Your to-do list can be a mile long when you’re apartment moving, but the first item on the list should always be: Do Your Homework!
Whether you are trekking across the country or moving down the street, it’s important to take a logical approach to apartment hunting. The last thing you want is to end up with a lease for a less-than-ideal space. Here are a few things you’ll want to consider as you start your search:
What’s your budget?
Experts recommend that your monthly rent should not exceed your weekly pay. If this sounds impossible for your market, you might want to start thinking about reliable roommates. Keep in mind the cost of utilities (if they aren’t included in your rent) as well as possible extra costs for parking or storage space.
What’s your lifestyle?
If you are single, you probably don’t want to end up in the suburbs near good schools. Likewise if you have a family, schools and a family-friendly atmosphere are most likely priorities. If you want to be close to the action, consider moving closer to the heart of your city. But if you are looking for a slower-paced way of life, the outlying areas are most likely a better choice.
What about your commute?
If you are like most people, you want your commute to work and back to be as short as possible. In that case, you’ll want to make sure your new apartment home is close to a major highway or public transportation.
Get recommendations
Searching online or in classified ads for listings is a great start when you are moving into an apartment, but you can’t beat a personal recommendation. If you are moving to a new city and changing jobs, ask the HR department or your new co-workers if they can give you any advice. If you are moving within the same area, ask every apartment dweller you know what they like about their apartment complex and why.
Moving into an apartment can be stressful at times, but if you begin your search with a clear head and be sure to cover all your bases, you are sure to end up with a home that you love.
